On a cool foggy morning we met up at Frankton, Kate and passenger in her shiny Prado, Leigh and Roger in his Suzuki (my work colleagues), Roman and myself in the Pajero. We took off with Kate in the lead and preceded to Garston were we turned off onto the Nevis road, then a quick call into the historic Ski Hut.
Up and over the top with only a very small patch of wind blown snow at the side of the road, other than that the ground was rather wet due to the recent rain. We came across some young guys driving out in cars, and later discovered that they must have stayed at the hut just off the track as the fire was still warm.
We stopped at the old hut ruins and had a look around, then onto the group of huts after going through a few deepish river crossings. I had a little mishap while taking a detour from a deep crossing on the track and drove into some deep muddy wheel ruts without enough forward momentum, as a result I got slightly stuck but I did a self recovery by winching myself out using Leigh’s Suzuki as an anchor.
Onto the golf course for a bite to eat for lunch, then we carried on out via road to the top of the saddle and proceeded down the track to Carrick Town and down to Bannockburn for an early finish.
Thanks Kate for leading the trip and no doubt we will see Leigh at a club meeting in the near future.
Cheers Nick
