Macetown Access

Information and FAQ

A managed access system will shortly be in place for Macetown Rd. A formal framework has been established to secure long-term public access to the historic Macetown road.
This iconic road, linking Arrowtown to the gold rush-era settlement of Macetown, is a treasured route for 4WDers, trampers, cyclists, and runners. But heavy use, environmental pressures, vandalism and deterioration of the track have created a risk that if nothing is done the track would have to be closed.
To preserve ongoing access for vehicles over Macetown Rd, a managed access system, including a locked gateway structure with adjacent squeeze barrier for cyclists and walkers, a CCTV camera surveillance system and a fee-based online permit system and an annual road maintenance programme will be operational by late January 2026.
In the meantime, the gate is in place but will be left unlocked until the full system is operational.
