There once was a four wheel drive
Whose occupants loved Cromwell pies
They were late to depart
And so missed the start
So now relate to you this trip’s lows & highs
From back roads round Omarama
To Naseby, that isn’t too far?!?!
Two days it did take
To see a quartz lake!
And SEVEN huts! All met with a hurrah!
Day 1
We drove in with an extra hanger on
Who didn’t stick around for very long
A fine lunch spot was found
By a hut with nice surrounds
West Manuherikia Track, you can’t go wrong
A climb up to the Hawkdun Range
Caused our truck to struggle to gain
But with heater on full
And a rest up the hill
We climbed to the top of the plain
The views were epic that day
Aoraki! Mt Aspiring! No way!
We made it to the hut
NO FLAT TYRES, what luck!
Now to dinner & hit the hay!
Day 2
A horrible theme started to appear
We were last at packing out, I fear
But with a patient group
We finally few the coup
Before the rest of the four wheel drives disappeared
Some real four wheel driving was had
To get to the next little pad
Hut Creek Hut is the best
Far cuter than the rest
Beware the track out, it’s bad (or fun, if you like lots of mud!)
An epic ridge drive I highly rate
To a quartz lake & strange moonscape
Where Oscar played fetch
But got a little wet
Then back down to the final gate
Now we get to the end of this report
We scratched the surface of this land of quartz
So much more to explore
Another trip, we implore!
Next time, to Awakino Ski Resort?????
